hey friends.
happy to be back here with a new piano piece and a re-opening of my solo piano series Ground Cover.
between the last series and now a lot has happened. i released Active Life (another piano centric record), maintained an ambient loops series called day loops (see my other posts for more of those), and have been writing and performing with my band DoomFolk StarterKit.
through out all of that, music keeps getting written and little projects grow slowly over time. i like to think about as the “spiral of creative interests.” one project isn’t always top of mind, but it’s in the spiral. so for me, i’ll always circle back and add a little more to the project and eventually it will become top of mind again and get pushed to the finish line. i just need to go around the spiral enough times.
the pieces in Ground Cover Vol II are actually the result of an unusual amount of “top of mind” time with all 7 pieces in the series being written within a few weeks of each other. sometimes thats the best way to do it and the gift is that it creates a sonic through-line because you use the same production habits and impulses through most of the tracks. let me know if you ever want me to write more about the thought process of making and finishing projects or my ad-hoc spiral of creative interests theory. happy to talk ad-nauseum about it.
Monroe Lake
wrote this piece haphazardly one day. it was a melody that helped break me out of some bad harmonic patterns i was having trouble shaking and after i found this, it helped give some momentum to continue writing for the rest of the project.
i decided to name it for a reservoir in central Indiana where I’ve been meeting a few friends to camp over the last few years. it’s the middle point between Chicago, Michigan, and Nashville, making it the perfect spot to get together.
in fact, the video that i made the animation for this song from was taken by my friend dan the first day we camped out there.
i love making things. its such a good feeling.
i hope you listen, i hope you enjoy it. i hope you let me know if you liked it, too and that you stick around for the rest of the series.
That’s all i’ve got today - thanks everyone.
This is beautiful David, including the sweet little animation.
