after a night of in and out sleep, i woke up at 4:44 to the buzz of my phone. my friend sent a “happy solstice” text.
the night before i left the lights low-to-off in my house, embracing the dark of the winter solstice and waiting to turn lights on until the sun came up (as best i could). being steeped in the dark waiting from the night, when i woke up i realized there was an opportunity to catch the sunrise and the break of the longest night.
i took a shower, made some coffee, grabbed my mittens and a blanket and went to the golf course where i knew i’d find a clear view the east sky.
leaving most personal details out, i just want to note how meaningful it was to watch. even with all the cliches and woo woo around the solstice, seeing the sun come up after the years longest night - i felt it very deeply and still feel it an hour and half later as i write this.
leaning into all cliche, i hope today marks a turning of seasons for you and that the days begin to feel brighter.
