been hearing the phrase “christmas maxing” a lot recently. and while it tragically sounds like the transmogrification of holiday tradition into something more “rogan-ification” or “protein bulk up” language (truly it is unassociated! [i think and hope]) there does seem to be something to it.
my limited understanding is that it is more than just simple decorations and the basic egg nog tropes this time of year. it’s tchotchkes, tons of lights, going to see Handel’s Messiah, ice skating. all of the experiences that seem cliche but seem to define this period of time in the loudest way possible.
and while i don’t think “christmas maxing” needs to be the move, there is something to be said for giving mental space and physical energy to acts and traditions that actually mark the season. mark the passing of time. create new history to build on.
it’s late in the game, but i’m asking myself what i can add to mark this season and build on the traditions i was given - or at the very least, keep them alive one more year.
